Local outdoor sports store 'gearing up' for closure

Gear Up for Outdoors has been a stop for many Thunder Bay residents over the past 40 years.

THUNDER BAY — After 40 years, Sandra and Jon Wynn have decided to retire and close their business, Gear Up for Outdoors.

For about three years, the couple tried to find someone to take over the business, but welcoming a grandson into the world a few weeks ago made it clear to them it was time to start a new chapter.

They said it was “heartbreaking” that they couldn’t find someone to take the business over, but it was just time for them to retire.

“We started 40 years ago. Central Avenue used to be a dirt road there, and we were one of the first retailers in this area. Then came the birth of the internet, and we were one of the first online companies in Ontario and especially in Northwestern Ontario,” Jon said.

“Our true value is to our local customers, and that's why we're having this sale now so that everybody can participate. We have nothing online, so everybody in the city who's been patrons for the last 40 years can enjoy that,” he added.

On Thursday, the closing sale began, and the Wynns said it was the type of crowd they usually see on Boxing Day.

“Everybody's had such great comments. It's very emotional for both of us there, but, we're in our 60s and we have a new life, so we have to move on,” Jon said.

Sandra said the couple can’t say enough about the staff at the store running the show for their final sale.

Thursday began with 30 per cent off store-wide.

“Every two weeks, the increments are going to go up, so it'll be 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 per cent. We're hoping to have it all wrapped up by November 15, maybe sooner if it continues like this,” she said.

“We just wanted to say thank you to all our customers in Thunder Bay and beyond. We wouldn't be where we are today without them," Jon said. "It's been a great ride.”
