SHUNIAH — The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority is planning to show off one of its conversation areas this weekend.

The conservation authority is holding Silver Harbour Day on Saturday, which is free to attend from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will celebrate several things, including Shuniah's 150 anniversary, Shuniah Emergency Services' 50th anniversary and, of course, and the opening of the new entrance for the Dive Park located at Silver Harbour Conservation Area.

The single-day event will feature demonstrations and education from the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority, Science North, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Thunder Country Diving, Thunder Bay Field Naturalists and more.

Silver Harbour's dive park was first established in the 1990s, as the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority partnered with Thunder Country Diving to offer the property as a training ground for those looking to gain certifications in scuba diving as well as a tourist attraction.

There are six sunken wrecks in the area that offer divers the chance to go 20 to 50 feet down in relatively clear water.

The new diving entrance is located further from the boat launch, which lowers the risk of interference with divers.
