Thunder Bay Counselling recognizes the mental health impact on people experiencing financial stressors. Our Financial Counselling Program works with individuals, families and organizations to help people minimize the stressors associated with money. Using strength-based, evidence and trauma informed approaches, Financial Health Counsellors help people gain confidence to address financial challenges and build financial resilience.
Through two service streams, there are multiple positions available
Economic Safety and Supports for Gender-Based Violence
Financial Health Counsellors specializing in the area of Economic Safety and Supports work with survivors of gender-based violence and their families to build short term economic safety and longer-term financial security. Services will assist to reduce vulnerability to economic abuse, establish supports for people when they are in urgent need, and help survivors and their families to rebuild and establish financial independence.
Qualifications
-A degree in a social science, preferably social work
-Experience working with survivors of gender-based violence
-Demonstrated understanding of the correlation between financial health and gender-based violence including economic abuse
-Understanding of financial services and systems would be an asset
Financial Empowerment
Financial Health Counsellors provide an array of financial empowerment services to improve people’s understanding of their use of money, addressing financial challenges, accessing resources and benefits and achieving personal financial goals. Services include: one-on-one counselling and coaching; assistance with accessing benefits; support to access tax filing, financial literacy; and information on financial services, systems and resources.
Qualifications
-A degree in a finance, business, or related field
-Strong understanding of personal finance, budgeting, credit, debt management, income benefit programs, and other government programs/policies related to people’s finances
-Demonstrated understanding of the correlations between financial health and other challenges including mental health, substance use health
