As Alex Rodriguez approaches Willie Mays on the all-time homerun list, it appears he is likely going to have the same kind of post-career fate as that of one Hall of Famer's god-son -- Barry Bonds.
Like Bonds, A-Rod is hearing a chorus of boos just about everywhere he plays. And he's not doing much to change the opinions of the many baseball fans.
As his lawyers prepares to appeal a 211-game suspension for A-Rod’s alleged use of performance enhancing drugs, Rodriguez continues to play for the Yankees.
In my opinion, the punishment handed out by the commissioner is too heavy and should have been, at the most, double what the others suspended in the drug scandal received.
But, it will be the off-season before that final chapter is written.
Bonds didn't even come close to earning the required votes for the Hall of Fame, and indications are that those sentiments of the majority of baseball writers will continue. I think the same thing will happen with Rodriguez after his career ends.
That career could be cut short if the 211-game suspension holds up.
That would put Rodriguez out of the game for a season and a third.
He's 38 now, and by the time he would be able to come back I think his chance of becoming the all-time homerun leader would be just as diminished as his abilities would be.
