It's been another tough season for the Border Cats.
They play out the remainder of the second half of the Northwoods League schedule, well back of the lead in the North Division. After an equally dismal first half, there will once again be no post-season baseball in the Lakehead this summer.
The results of this season come on the heels of last season, which was another disappointing one.
In fact, the Cats haven't earned a trip to the Northwoods League playoffs since 2008, when they won it all for the second time in franchise history.
Don't expect the Cats to get back in the playoffs anytime soon.
Here's why: As the league footprint has grown, including cities that are much closer to larger centres, it appears most of the blue-chip type college players are opting to play there. You can't really blame them, it's where they will be scouted more and get more exposure.
Earlier this season, former Border Cat Jonathan Diaz had a brief call with the Blue Jays.
Blaine Hardy, who had a cup of coffee with the team several seasons back was called up by Detroit.
But, it seems most former Northwoods League stars, such as Cy Young-winning Max Scherzer of the Tigers, the Red Sox Allan Craig, and the Rays Ben Zobrist, made their marks with other teams.
And, the disappointing attendance of Cats games doesn't help matters, but in the case of where top players go it probably really factor in that much.
