Cats games feature future big-leaguers
We are now into another season of Border Cats baseball.
The calibre of play in the Northwoods League is some of the best you can see involving college-level players.
But, don't just take my word for it. When the latest major league season opened there were 30 former Northwoods League players sprinkled on those rosters. Some are making a significant impact, like Curtis Granderson of the New York Yankees and Andre Ethier of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
These guys played in the league before Thunder Bay was a member, and here are just some of the players Border Cats fans had a chance to see over the last few summers:
• Ben Zobrist of Tampa played with Wisconsin in 2003
• Daniel Descalso of St. Louis played with Wisconsin in 2006, and his Cards team mate Allen Craig with Alexandria in 2005
• Jordan Zimmerman of Washington played for Eau Claire in 2006
• Max Scherzer, now with Detroit, played for La Crosse in 2004,
• Andy Dirks was on Brainerd’s roster in 2007
• Drew Smyly played for Duluth in 2009.
And the list goes on.
There is absolutely no doubt that if you saw a few Cats games this summer, you would see some players who soon have their own bubble-gum cards, or their images in video games.
It is great entertainment for a reasonable price at Port Arthur Stadium.
