Before the snow takes hold with its winter grip, let's have one last chat baseball.
Even though I was personally disappointed with the failure of the Detroit Tigers in the American League championship series, the month of October itself once again didn’t disappoint.
David Ortiz took a page out of Willie Stargell's book, leading the Red Sox to the title. His hitting prowess in the World Series win over St. Louis was one for the ages.
Next up will be the post-season awards, post-season player moves, the culmination of the Alex Rodriguez affair, and the honour roll for the 2014 Hall of Fame inductions.
Bid for the Worlds
And we also can look forward to end of December to see where things might fall with Thunder Bay's bid for the World Junior championships in 2015.
After the incredible success of the event in 2010, fans are really hopeful we get the opportunity to host the event again. Thunder Bay represents Canada in the mix, and the end of next month is the deadline for bids from other nations.
Optimistic Cats
After a disappointing season on the diamond for the Border Cats, optimism is fresh again with the hiring of a new manager for 2014. Johnny Hernandez, a one-time St. Louis Cardinals prospect will be coming here from Long Island, New York to guide the fortunes next summer.
By the way, if you want to hear a great song about the end of the baseball season, listen to Night Game by Paul Simon from Still Crazy After All These Years.
There were two men down
And the score was tied
In the bottom of the eighth
When the pitcher died
And they laid his spikes
On the pitcher's mound
And his uniform was torn
And his number was left on the ground
Then the night turned cold
Colder than the moon
The stars were white as bones
The stadium was old
Older than the screams
Older than these teams
There were three men down
And the season lost
And the tarpaulin was rolled
Upon the winter frost
