Through viewing a selection of pictures the participants chose an image that resonated with them.

The images became the starting point to share stories and memories.

Recorded on strips of ribbon and fabric, phrases were woven into large frames. As the groups shared the process, the finished pieces reflect memories and experiences.

The one day event began with an opening ceremony led by Elder Diane Michano-Richmond. Community engaged artists Eleanor Albanese and Michelle Richmond-Saravia then guided the participants through a creative process that explored relationships through storytelling, art making and connection to the Land.

Participants included the Thunder Bay Indian Friendship Centre Lifelong Care Program, Community Closing Assistance, students from Confederation College course with Michelle Richmond-Saravia and Cindy Visser’s grade 5/6 classroom from St. James School.

The event contributed to Article 63 of the Call to Actions contained in the Truth and Reconciliation Report, which calls for “building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect,” and Article 83, which calls for “a strategy for Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists to undertake collaborative projects and produce works that contribute to the reconciliation process”.

Connecting Through Stories is made possible with generous support of HC Link, the Thunder Bay Art Gallery, beSuperior Consulting and artist Crystal Nielsen.
