THUNDER BAY – Another death associated with COVID-19 has been recorded by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.

Since the first death was recorded on April 24, 2020, there have been 78 deaths attributed in part to the virus.

The health unit on Friday announced 196 new cases, which brings the 2022 total to 3,854, surpassing the total from the entirety of 2021 – with the caveat that because of limited testing availability, the actual total to date since Dec. 31 is likely well below the actual total, indicating a much higher spread in the District of Thunder Bay.

There are also 50 district residents hospitalized, four more than there were on Wednesday, but still 11 in the intensive care unit, the same as two days ago. Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is reporting 38 COVID-positive cases in hospital, with 10 of those in the ICU.

There have been 8,118 known cases of COVID-19 in the Thunder Bay District since the pandemic began, with 7,725 considered to be resolved.
