THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay’s hospitalization rate associated with COVID-19 is holding steady.
On Friday, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced there are 35 people in hospital diagnosed with the virus, an equal number to the count announced two days earlier. There is one more person with COVID-19 in the intensive care unit, climbing from six to seven.
According to figures released by the health unit, there were 76 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed, but since the start of 2022, the province has drastically limited the eligibility for molecular PCR tests to the most vulnerable populations.
Earlier this week, Dr. Kieran Moore, the chief medical officer of health for Ontario, said it’s likely the true number of cases is 10 times the published amount.
There are currently 215 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Thunder Bay and there have been 8,905 confirmed cases since the pandemic began in 2020. The district’s first COVID-19 case was announced on March 27, 2020.
Of the total number of confirmed cases 4,641 have been reported in 2022.
