THUNDER BAY – COVID-19-related hospitalizations have reached a 2022 high.
The Thunder Bay Distict Health Unit on Friday announced 146 new confirmed cases of the virus, also stating that 61 people are hospitalized within its catchment area, 10 more than was reported two days earlier.
Five of those patients are in intensive care, two more than on Wednesday. Thirty-five patients, including four in the ICU, are admitted to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
The health unit also announced its 90th death related to COVID-19 since the pandemic began, the 20th reported this year.
It should be cautioned that confirmed cases only consider those proven to have the virus with a molecular test, which since the beginning of 2022 have been restricted to only those in the most vulnerable populations, and the actual number of cases is believed to be exponentially higher.
Since the pandemic began there have been 11,623 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 7,359 of them happening this year.
