THUNDER BAY – Hospitalizations associated with COVID-19 continue to remain steady in the District of Thunder Bay.

According to figures released on Friday by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, there are 25 people in hospital in the region with COVID-19, five of whom are in the intensive care unit. That’s one more case in hospital than there was on Wednesday, but two fewer in the ICU.

The health unit announced 54 new lab-confirmed cases, but cautioned that because PCR testing is limited only to those in vulnerable situations, the number of new cases is likely vastly under-reporting the true number of cases in its catchment area.

Of the previously reported cases, 71 are now considered to have been resolved, leaving 121 known active cases in Thunder Bay, the lowest total since the change in testing was put in place on Jan. 1. It’s the lowest overall total since Christmas Eve, when testing was much more prevalent.

There were no new deaths reported on Friday.

Since the pandemic began there have been 9,668 cases of COVID-19 confirmed, 5,404 of them in 2022.
