THUNDER BAY – The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the District of Thunder Bay has dropped significantly over the weekend.

There are 37 per cent fewer cases in area hospitals on Monday, down to 38 from the 61 that were announced this past Friday.

Just three of those cases are in intensive care units, two fewer than announced three days ago.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Monday announced 144 new confirmed cases and 159 previously diagnosed cases are now considered resolved, leaving 315 known active cases in the health unit’s catchment area.

However, those numbers are believed to exponentially under-represent the true number of cases because access to PCR testing is limited to certain populations and is not available to the general public at large.

There have been 11,767 confirmed COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in the District of Thunder Bay, with 7,503 of those cases occurring in 2022.
