THUNDER BAY -- Despite the province vastly limiting who can get a PCR test to confirm their COVID-19 status, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Friday reported a single-day record 161 cases.

The number likely heavily under-represents the true number of cases in the District of Thunder Bay, with testing limited to vulnerable populations, including those associated with hospitals and long-term care.

There have been 607 cases reported over the past five days, and 4,885 cases reported since the pandemic began.

Another 89 cases are considered to have been resolved, leaving the region with 265 known, confirmed cases, which is also likely an under-representation.

The health unit said there were no changes to the number of patients hospitalized, leaving seven district residents in hospital, including one in the intensive care unit.

Overall, there are currently 15 patients admitted to Thunder Bay Regional with COVID-19, two in ICU. The medical/surgical occupancy is at 89.6 per cent and the ICU occupancy is 86.4 per cent.

Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Thursday announced it has reopened a dedicated COVID-19 unit on the hospital's third floor.
