Health Unit targeting 70+ crowd with special booster vaccination clinic

For two days next week, seniors won't have to compete with younger population to get their booster shots, says Dr. Janet DeMille.

THUNDER BAY -- The Thunder Bay District Health Unit will offer a special booster vaccination clinic for those 70 and older on Monday and Tuesday.

Dr. Janet DeMille, medical officer of health at the health unit, on Thursday said the decision was made in order to help some of the more vulnerable members of the population more easily find a vaccination appointment.

"It's not going through the provincial booking system. There will be a special booking link and it's probably going to be over at the Heritage building," DeMille said.

The link will be available on the health unit website.

DeMille said people of all ages are booking appointments at the CLE clinic and the special clinics are a way to ensure seniors don't fall through the vaccination cracks.

"There are people who are 70 years of age and older who may be trying to find an appointment and not being successful. This clinic will be just targeted to that particular age group, so we can't use the provincial booking system because other people who are kind of keen will try to occupy these spots. These are special clinics. We're just hoping to get to that group who are in general at higher risk of COVID," DeMille said.

She added the clinics are aimed at providing booster shots, but if someone in the qualifying age bracket was in need of a second dose, they would fit them in.
