TORONTO -- The Toronto Star is reporting that masking requirements in Ontario will be lifted in most settings, including schools, on March 21.

According to the newspaper, citing sources in the know, the move will mean no mandatory masks in stores or restaurants, or while inside elementary or secondary schools.

Dr. Kieran Moore, the province's chief medical officer of health, is expected to confirm the details at a news conference on Wednesday.

Masking is expected to stay in place in certain settings, including hospitals, long-term care facilities and when using public transit. Federal rules will also remain in place requiring masks to be worn on airplanes and on trains.

Private businesses may still require patrons to wear masks, but won't be directed to by public health rules.

Masks have been mandatory in public indoor settings in Thunder Bay since July 2020.
