THUNDER BAY – COVID vaccination rates in Thunder Bay are down to their lowest weekly totals since the health unit began unveiling totals in early April.
Just 2,355 shots were given out for the week ending on Aug. 7, bringing the total number of vaccines administered in the district to 213,659. Of the new doses, 625 were first doses and the remaining 1,730 were second shots.
As of this past Saturday, 69.6 per cent of the population 12 and older living in the District of Thunder Bay have received both shots, a total of 98,434 people.
A total of 80.3 per cent of the 12-plus population has had at least one shot. Some 115,521 people have had at least one shot.
However, according to provincial numbers, which are calculated differently than the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, 86 per cent of those 12 and older have received at least one shot and 75.7 per cent have received both.
Broken down by age, the younger set continues to lag behind the over-50 crowd in terms of vaccination percentage. Those aged 80 and older, 70 to 79, 60 to 69 and 50 to 59 have all crossed the 80 per cent threshold, according to health unit figures.
The 18 to 29 age group is next closest, at 78.8 per cent, followed closely by the 40 to 49 age category (74.2 per cent) and the 12 to 17 age group (74.1 per cent).
The 30- to 39-year-old set continues to lag behind, with just 69.1 per cent having had one shot.
