Summer Student - Assistant Coach/Program Coordinator

The Thunder Bay Rowing Club requires an Assistant Coach/Program Coordinator for their summer rowing programs. This job opportunity is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport and Ministry of Government and Consumer Services as part of Ontario's 2017 Summer Experience Program.
The successful applicant must:
• be currently enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution or have graduated within the past six months
• be older than 15 years and not yet 25* years old on the first day of employment (* or 29 years old for disabled persons within the meaning of s.10 of the Ontario Human Rights Code, R.S.O. 1990, c. H.19)
• currently reside in Ontario
• be eligible to work in Canada and have a Social Insurance Number.
• possess a valid Pleasure Craft Operator Card
Priority will be given to those with prior rowing experience.
Duties will include:
• interacting with coaches, athletes, parents and the media
• acting as assistant coach under the supervision of an experienced coach.
• advertising and communicating rowing activities through print and social media
• assisting at rowing regattas
Dates and Times:
A minimum of 290 hours from May 5 to August 26, 2017. Apart from the orientation and regattas, these hours are all weekdays between 4 and 9 pm and Saturdays between 7:30 am and 12:30 pm. Job particulars include:
• 16 hours orientation and training between May 5 and May 12. Training starts May 5th with a 13-hour NCCP recognized Learn to Row Instructors Workshop Friday evening, May 5 through Sunday afternoon May 7. In the following week there will be an additional 3 hours of orientation and training on land and water.
• acting as assistant coach weekday evenings and Saturday mornings helping with the recreational, competitive and/or novice programs from May 15 to August 26.
• assisting at two Regattas: Thunder Bay Sprints Regatta, Saturday, June 24th; and Kenora Tops and Bottoms Regatta, Saturday, July 22nd (with travel days Friday and Sunday)
• 10 flexible hours for media releases and other administrative duties.
Depending on the skill and wishes of the applicant, the coaching hours may be increased.
Remuneration is commensurate with rowing experience:
• minimum wage for a person with no previous rowing experience
• up to $15/hr for a person with some previous rowing experience but no coaching
• up to $20/hr for a person with previous coaching experience in rowing
