Jorji Laviolette, in a letter to the editor that appears on this page, says she’s afraid to be outside after dark.
For a Cumming Street family, being inside did little to protect them from the thugs who think they own the city once the sun sets.
Loretta Methot and her family were enjoying a Saturday night at the homefront, when they heard a commotion outside.
Heading out to their yard, Methot found three people arguing loudly, and asked them to tone it down. Instead they were attacked. Then, after heading back inside, their door was booted in and her boyfriend was pepper sprayed, resulting in a trip to the hospital for all five – including three young children.
What’s going on in this city??
We’ve formed a Crime Prevention Council, and while they’re working to solve the underlying social problems that lead to criminal acts, things seem to be getting worse.
At least that’s public perception.
We’re up to four murders in 2012, the latest appearing to be drug-related and possibly pre-planned.
Everybody says crime is their top priority, starting from the mayor on down.
But what exactly is being done, concrete steps, that is, to eradicte it at its roots? Has any progress been made? Ask the average Joe on the street, and the answer is a firm, “No.”
It’s time to speed up the process.
