To the editor:

Hello Thunder Bay,

My campaign has focused upon people, places and things with a dialogue regarding community needs vs community wants. My vision for the city is clear…let’s work together to create a community that is vibrant, inclusive and safe. A community that is both environmentally and economically viable.

However, throughout the election campaign the number one issue that people bring up to me for discussion is the concern about crime and drug use in our city.

I have been clear that I believe that the best way to address these issues is to address what is called the social determinants of health which are poverty, homelessness, education, health and employment. This is a community collaborative long term vision and action plan that I encourage all Thunder Bay citizens to get behind as overseen by the Crime Prevention Council and the Drug Strategy Committee.

I believe that the majority of people who turn to crime do so out of need of desperation. I believe that people turn to drugs to meet a financial need or to meet a personal need to deal with trauma or other personal issues.

The individuals turning to crime and drugs in our communities are potential employees, entrepreneurs and neighbours. By having city council concentrate on addressing the root causes of crime (the social determinants) and providing more focused collaborative community engagement, action, and support on addressing these matters, not only are the issues of crime and drugs being addressed, with individuals and families being supported, but also the economic potentials and impacts on our community are addressed.

As an active and engaged member of the community, I have the leadership experience to help move our city forward.

Thunder Bay, together we are better, together we are stronger, together we are more successful. Let’s move UP. Together!

On Monday, I humbly ask you to vote for Jeff Upton, Councillor at Large. I would welcome your vote as a community show of support to address these matters and initiatives.

Jeff Upton,
Councillor at-large candidate
