Letter: Workers aren’t to blame

In response to Caroline Stone’s letter “Striking a nerve” in a local newspaper, I would like to offer some actual facts. Facts: These workers are not on strike, they have been locked out by their employer.
In response to Caroline Stone’s letter “Striking a nerve” in a local newspaper, I would like to offer some actual facts.

Facts: These workers are not on strike, they have been locked out by their employer.  Canada Post is owned by the Government of Canada, which means Canadians own this very profitable corporation; the workers, most affected by the greed of Canada Post, are the future workers.

Canada Post has introduced a two-tier wage, benefit and pension package that will only harm our future wage earners and taxpayers who will be assisting all Canadians by contributing to a strong economy.

Lower wages, benefits and pensions for them means lower taxes and services for Canadians as a whole.  Canada Post workers are the lowest paid postal workers in the entire industrialized world.

Walk a day in their shoes. I have and it is not pretty. Extreme weather conditions, extreme weights and incredible injuries are a daily occurrence for these workers.

Canada Post president Deepak Chopra collected more than $497, 500 just in wages not including bonuses, benefits and definitely not his pension.

Let’s not forget everyone else in between; just to sit on the board of directors nets you more than $20,000 for a few meetings a year.

Canada Post collected $7,312 million in revenues last year with $291 million in pure profit, in one year alone.  Instead of demanding the postal workers take cuts now and for future workers, we should be demanding that the presidents and corporate big wigs be taking cuts.
As workers we need to continue to increase working wages and benefits for all Canadians not decrease it.  This is how minimum wage has been increased.

I for one could assure you that those folks working minimum wage jobs now would much prefer an increased living wage for all Canadians instead of everyone else racing down to a lower wage.

Let’s put the blame and focus where it should be, on the greedy corporate level, not on each other!
