1,100 km canoeing/hiking/cycling route shown on new map (2 Photos)

The Path of the Paddle Association commissioned the map

THUNDER BAY — People looking to canoe, hike or cycle through Northwestern Ontario can now access a new tool.

The Path of the Paddle Association has issued an overview map covering its 1,100-kilometre recreational route from Fort William Historical Park to Whiteshell Provincial Park in southeastern Manitoba.

The Path of the Paddle group operates this section of Canada's national trail, The Great Trail.

The route goes through wilderness areas as well as a number of communities.

The new map includes symbols for waterfalls, portages, campsites and points of interest.

Path of the Paddle board chair Clara Butikofer says it was created for the purpose of trip planning and route overview.

"During this time of the pandemic, when everyone is advised to stay safe and stay close to home, there is no better resource available for planning adventures into the wilderness of Northwestern Ontario," Butikofer said.

She said the map was created largely through the efforts of volunteers.

Destination Northern Ontario, one of 13 not-for-profit regional tourism programs supported by the Ontario government, provided funding for the project.

The map can be purchased through the Path of the Paddle website and at selected local outdoor supply stores.
