15 new forest fires in Northwestern Ontario

Two fires near Bedivere Lake and Jake Lake have each burned about 30 hectares.

DRYDEN, Ont. — The number of active forest fires in Northwestern Ontario grew to 54 on Monday, after the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reported 15 new outbreaks.

The largest of the new fires is Thunder Bay 36, near Bedivere Lake southwest of Upsala.  It had burned about 30 hectares by early Monday evening.

A similarly-sized fire, Nipigon 7, is burning is burning near Jake Lake, 45 kilometres north of Nipigon. 

Neither blaze is under control.

Of the current active fires in the Northwest Region, 24 are not under control, four are being observed, 10 are being held and 16 are under control.

The MNRF reports a high-to-extreme fire hazard in the southern half of the region near the U.S. border, and a low-to-moderate hazard in other parts of the region.
