UPDATE: 16 new COVID-19 cases in the Thunder Bay area

Seven of the new cases are connected to outbreaks at the correctional centre and the jail.

THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay District Health Unit reports 16 new COVID-19 cases in the city or immediate surrounding area.

Four of the cases are connected to the outbreak at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre, and three are at the Thunder Bay District Jail.

Five other cases are listed as close contacts with previously identified cases, while one has no known source of exposure.

Another case is related to travel outside Northwestern Ontario, and two are still pending.

Seventeen cases have been resolved since Monday, leaving the number of active cases in the city and district at 142, one fewer than on Monday.

One person remains in hospital for treatment.

The number of cases so far during the pandemic in the Thunder Bay District has now passed the 1,000 mark, reaching a cumulative total of 1,001.

Across Ontario, only 745 new cases are reported Tuesday.

Clarification:  In an earlier version of this story, the TBDHU reported that 14 cases have been resolved since Monday.  The TBDHU has now issued a correction to its original statement, noting that 17 cases have been resolved.
