17 forest fires in NW Ontario not under control

Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reported 11 new fires Sunday afternoon.

DRYDEN, Ont. — Sunday was an active day for forest fires in Northwestern Ontario.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reported 11 new outbreaks by mid-afternoon.

In its most recent update, the ministry said there are now 29 forest fires across the region, including 17 listed as "not under control."

The largest is a 90 hectare blaze near Lizotte Lake, about 26 kilometres northeast of North Spirit Lake. 

The ministry's Thunder Bay district has two fires not under control, but both are relatively small.

One is a 0.3 hectare fire near Brennan Lake, 60 kilometres northwest of 
Armstrong.

The other is a 0.5 hectare blaze near Windblown Lake, 70 kilometres southeast of Atikokan.

The forest fire hazard across the region is predominantly moderate to high.
