THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay District Health unit reports 17 new COVID-19 cases, and says all result from close contact with people already infected with the virus.

The active case count in the district climbed on Monday to 54, which is 12 more than the TBDHU reported on Saturday.

It's the highest total since May 5.

Eight of the new cases are in First Nation communities, four are in district communities, and five are in the City of Thunder Bay or immediate surrounding townships.

The TBDHU does not provide a geographic breakdown of COVID cases.

However, Geraldton District Hospital reported Monday that there are now 38 active cases in the Greenstone area including surrounding First Nations.

Three new cases came on the heels of 11 new ones on Sunday, seven on Saturday, and 17 on Friday.

Long Lake # 58 First Nation declared a state of emergency on Friday after 22 active COVID-19 cases were confirmed in that community, which is a neighbour to Longlac.

Chief Judy Desmoulin was not immediately available Monday to provide an update.

The Marathon Family Health Team and the North of Superior Healthcare group on Monday reported four new cases in the town, and an active caseload of six,  including one individual who is receiving treatment at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

In the month of May, the Thunder Bay district has seen a total of 137 new cases.

The TBDHU also said Monday that lab tests had confirmed 13 additional previously identified cases involving Variants of Concern.

NOTE: This story has been updated to include additional information from the Greenstone and Marathon areas.
