$18 million in city road, infrastructure work underway

THUNDER BAY — The summer construction season is underway on the streets of Thunder Bay.

The city says it's investing $18 million this season on road and sidewalk rehabilitation, residential paving, sanitary and storm sewers, watermain repairs and replacement, bridge and culvert work and streetlight renewal.

In an announcement Monday, the city reminded motorists to expect road closures, detours and delays at various points this summer.

The following areas are currently undergoing or will be undergoing work that's expected to affect traffic:

Sewer and watermain work, and road construction 

  •  Kingston Street, from James Street until the dead end
  •  James Street, from Frederica Street to Kingston Street
  •  Syndicate Avenue from Dease Street to Leith Street
  •  Brodie Street, from Dease Street to Leith Street
  •  Dease Street, from Syndicate Avenue to May Street
  •  Sills Street, from Brunswick Street to East of Selkirk Street
  •  Norah Street, from Donald Street to Arthur Street
  •  Tupper Street, from Jean Street to Prospect Avenue
  •  Shuniah Street, Clayte Street, Matthews Street and Huron Avenue
  •  Balmoral Street, from Hewitson Street and Alloy Drive

Road, street lighting, bridge and sidewalk improvements are also scheduled for –

  •  River Street, from Madeline Street to High Street, for pavement resurfacing
  •  Margaret Street, from Balsam Street to Gibbon Street, for pavement resurfacing and multi-use trail work
  •  Centennial Park Road, from Arundel Street to the park entrance, for pavement resurfacing
  •  Hazelwood Drive, from 2.1 km north of Dawson Road to 600 metres south of Melbourne Road, for pavement resurfacing
  •  Leslie Avenue, from Merrill Street to Adams Street, for sidewalk improvements
  •  Merrill Street, from Leslie Avenue to Grenville Avenue, for sidewalk improvements
  •  Lillian Street, from Leslie Street to Grenville Avenue, for sidewalk improvements
  •  Arundel Street, from Dewe Avenue to Grenville Avenue, for sidewalk improvements
  •  River Street at Elm Street, for retaining wall work
  •  Hartvikson Street, for sidewalk improvements and cul-de-sac work
  •  Court Street at McVicar Creek, for a new Pedestrian Crossover

The above list includes major, traffic-affecting construction.

The city said other work, including sidewalk replacements and curb and gutter repairs, is scheduled for residential areas and other parts of the city.

River Street detours start this week

Pavement resurfacing on River from Madeline to High will start this week, in stages.  Stage one will allow only westbound traffic on River, with eastbound vehicles being detoured on Rockwood Avenue to Dawson Street to High Street.

In the next stage, River will be fully closed to permit final grading and paving.

Access to businesses in the area will be via Madeline Street.

The work is expected to be substantially complete by the end of July.
