Kevin is part of the Local Journalism Initiative.

According to News Media Canada, an LJI reporter's role is for the "creation of original civic journalism that is relevant to the diverse needs of underserved communities across Canada, broadening availability and consumption of local and regional news on matters of civic governance."

In no particular order, these are Kevin's top five stories he covered this year.

Neck guards a priority for junior leagues - This piece was more of a reaction item to the death of a professional hockey player in the United Kingdom and talked with local figures in Northwestern Ontario about instituting neck guards during hockey games. I worked closely with Mike Stimpson on this piece and was able to add several voices to the story. I was really proud of the collaboration part with Mike, and it was one of the best articles that I was involved in.

Holland defends absence from Pride events - This article gave a chance for Thunder Bay–Atikokan MPP Kevin Holland to defend himself against criticism that he has been absent from Pride events in his riding. Even though MPP Holland was announcing funding for Norwest Arena and Oliver Paipoonge, I felt that putting the tough question at his feet was the responsible thing to do as a reporter. The story showed the criticism and his claims that he is being unfairly grilled on his lack of attendance at community events.

Empty Bowls Caring Hearts to return to in-person next month - This story was about the annual fundraiser for the Thunder Bay Food Bank and Shelter House returning to a sit-down meal after being limited to a virtual drive-thru format during the COVID-19 pandemic. I have written this story in previous roles and have a good working relationship with the organizer, Robin Cooper. It was a joy to tell the story not only about the event itself but also to delve into her history of getting on board.

'These are people that are loved': Gathering recognizes those lost to overdoses - This article was about an event marking International Overdose Awareness Day at Paterson Park. I enjoy writing stories that are more human interest, and this one, in particular, got a lot of positive comments from those that I’m close with.

Work continues ahead of Junior B hockey season - The series of articles that I have done about the Lakehead Junior Hockey League (LJHL) is something that I’m proud of because I started doing them in my previous role and have continued doing with Dougall Media. The league doesn’t get a lot of attention in Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario, and I have been able to find some great stories involving the teams and players.
