Thunder Bay's 55-Plus Centre is gearing up to celebrate 25 years of operation.

Earlier this week current and former volunteers, centre visitors and board members celebrated the 25th anniversary of the centre's ground breaking.

The ground was broken in 1990 at what would become Thunder Bay's 55-Plus Centre on River Street.

Since then, the centre has grown to become the heart of the city's senior community.

Earlier this week, several community members who were first here 25 years ago, held a small ceremony to mark the occasion.

Margaret Bianco was on the Centre's first board of governors and she says the facility has grown far beyond their expectations.

Fifty-five Plus Centre officials say they have more events planned for next September, when the Centre will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its opening.
