THUNDER BAY -- CKPR radio is celebrating its 90th birthday, and the station had some big surprises for its listeners on Wednesday in honour of the milestone.
CKPR's signal first hit the local airwaves in 1931 on the AM dial before being switched to the FM frequency at 91.5 in 2007.
To help celebrate the 90th birthday, the station is handing out $90 to lucky listeners every hour until 6 p.m., along with other prizes such as free oil changes from various sponsors.
CKPR Program Director Brad Hilgers said the station put together a special anniversary program that listeners would enjoy.
"It's a big deal. We were going back through the historic audio files that we collected throughout the years," Hilgers said.
Throughout the day, listeners got the chance to listen to some highlights from the years gone by, which included past jingles and commercials.
