SHUNIAH, Ont. – Shuniah has decided to ditch its reeve.
But the community is not involved in any kind of political upheaval. The change only focuses on the title itself, as Shuniah is opting to go with mayor instead of reeve.
The town council voted to make a change to the title of its top elected official at a recent council meeting.
As a result Wendy Landry, who was elected to her first term in October, becomes the town’s first mayor.
Coun. Don Smith said the change was encouraged by the Thunder Bay District Municipal League and supported by council.
Landry told TBT News the label change provides more respect for the position when dealing with government ministers.
