Impala Canada will contribute $375,000 to the Roots to Harvest capital campaign

THUNDER BAY — Impala Canada has announced the largest ever corporate donation to Thunder Bay's Roots to Harvest.

The $375,000 gift is also the mining company's biggest ever social investment.

It makes Impala a foundational partner in the $2 million dollar capital campaign launched by Roots to Harvest last month.

The organization is developing a Community Food Centre and new programs at its facility on Fort William Road.

Impala owns the Lac des Iles palladium mine north of Thunder Bay.

"As a mining company committed to sustainable practices and a major employer in the region, Impala Canada is seizing an opportunity to amplify the good work of Roots to Harvest, and we are honoured to play a supporting role," said CEO Tim Hill.

Erin Beagle is the executive director of Roots to Harvest.

She said a gift of this size brings both immediate and long-term impacts for thousands of people in Northwestern Ontario.

"The demand for Roots to Harvest Services in our region continues to grow, and having this secured and sustained funding will mean we can ensure that the mantra of 'good for all' is realized," Beagle said.

The Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre extended its congratulations to both organizations, saying the announcement means the opening of a community kitchen with a focus on traditional foods is one step closer.

Executive Director Charlene Baglien said "Our elders in the Life Long Care Program will be extremely honoured to share a meal and enjoy ancestral foods with family and community."

Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry Minister Greg Rickford also weighed in, saying the mining industry plays a critical role in the vitality of northern communities.

"Impala Canada's investment in Roots to Harvest is a perfect example of how partnerships between businesses and grassroots organizations can help the vulnerable...and build capacity and resilience," Rickford said.

MP Patty Hajdu, (Lib -Thunder Bay-Superior North), said Roots to Harvest is recognized far and wide for their work it does in the community.

“Roots to Harvest and Erin Beagle have long been a strong voice and community partner to the people and organizations of this region. I’m thrilled for them to undertake this new journey and pleased to see this investment by private industry to recognize and support the important work they do for our neighbours.”

Impala's donation means the capital campaign is within 20 per cent of its goal.
