THUNDER BAY - A huge swath of Thunder Bay is without power on Saturday afternoon.

Thunder Bay Hydro says about 3,000 customers are affected by the outage, which stretches south from the Harbour Expressway to Walsh Street and east from Waterloo Street to May Street and Memorial Avenue.

The utility tweeted they are onsite in north Fort William and were forced to shut down power when a hydro pole was taken out and caught on fire on Balmoral Street near the intersection at Harold Crescent.

Two trucks were used to contain the pole fire, but Cpt. Jim Gowanlock said the situation was always "under control." Thunder Bay Fire Rescue performed a series of elevator rescues, and are in the process of diverting traffic.

There is no indication of when power will be restored.
