THUNDER BAY - A southern Ontario man accused of killing two Brantford residents made a court appearance on Friday before a justice of the peace.

Kareem Zedan, 22, of Pickering is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Brantford couple Larry Reynolds, 64, and Dorothy Lynn VanEvery, 62.

The two Brantford residents were found deceased in their home in July 2019.

Zedan appeared by audio before Justice of the Peace Marcel Donio from the Thunder Bay District Jail and was remanded in custody to June 5.

Duty counsel Patrick Birchard spoke on behalf of Zedan’s lawyer, Steve Lyon, who had requested Crown counsel to provide an update on disclosure and which crown attorney has been assigned to Zedan’s matter.

“I can’t comment on either at this point,” Crown counsel Piera M. Pasloski said by audio on Friday, May 15.

Zedan was initially arrested on March 24 in Thunder Bay in connection to the deaths of Reynolds and VanEvery.

Zedan made national headlines last month after he was improperly released from custody on April 1 from the Thunder Bay District Jail. An internal investigation was subsequently launched by the Ministry of Solicitor General to prevent the error from happening in the future.

He was re-arrested by police on April 2 and faces additional charges.

His next court date is June 5.
