THUNDER BAY - The number of active COVID-19 cases has climbed back above 200, as the number of new daily cases surges again.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is reporting 34 new cases on Wednesday. With only 16 other cases considered resolved, the number of active cases has climbed to 216.
Another individual has died as a result of the virus, bringing the total death toll in the district to 52, including 22 in March.
The district fell below 200 active cases on Tuesday to 199, the first time since Feb. 19. It's the first time in two weeks that the region's active case count has increased.
Of the new cases reported on Wednesday, 14 are the result of household contacts, 13 are listed as other close contacts, four have no known exposure, and three are pending.
Thunder Bay and surrounding areas account for 29 of the cases, while four are in district communities, and one is in a First Nation community.
There is one more person admitted to hospital, bringing the total number of district hospitalizations to 18, with three in the intensive care unit.
To date there has been a total of 2,860 positive cases of COVID-19 in the Thunder Bay District, with 2,592 considered to be resolved.
