Lakehead University found a way to exercise the minds and bodies of the city’s youth.
For the second summer, the school is offering Active U day camp. And while it offers an array of traditional day camp activities like swimming and sports throughout the week, it also introduces them to various faculties at the school.
“They just really like the opportunity to do things with their hands and create different things,” Lakehead athletics’ program coordinator Amanda Nesbitt said.
On Tuesday the camp’s 11 kids were busy making kites with the help of Lakehead’s engineering department. Using recycling bags, straws and tape, they built their own kites before taking them outside for a test run.
Jack Hansen, an 11-year-old who said his favourite part of the camp has been soccer, said he’s been having a lot of fun with the educational activities.
“It’s pretty much everything that I love,” he said of the camp. “I just loved everything.”
His friend Adam Luoma, 11, said he and his parents looked into a bunch of camps before heading to Lakehead.
“The name active kind of made me want to do it,” he said.
As for his favourite part so far, Luoma said that was easy.
“Arriving in the morning because that means the day starts and I get to do all this stuff,” he said.
The camp is also a way to show off the campus to future students.
“Kind of plant that seed in their head that down the road university isn’t really a scary place to be,” Nesbitt said.
Lakehead starts up another camp July 22.
