Superior North EMS is looking to add some artistic flair to their new headquarters.

The city has put a call out to any local or Canadian artists to submit their ideas for an art sculpture for the front of the still-under-construction Junot Avenue EMS headquarters.

“The facility is very functional. It’s very appropriate for our needs,” said director Norm Gale. “But also if we can enrich the neighbourhood and enrich the city, that’s beneficial as well.”

Gale said they’re looking for some kind of sculpture to sit outside the front of the building.

“It will be themed along the lines of emergency medical services and the importance of time and the fragility of the human body,” he said.

The project falls into the city’s Clean, Green and Beautiful initiative and has an all-inclusive budget of $67,500. That includes everything from supplies to installation.

Public art coordinator Reana Mussato said EMS approached the city with the idea for the artwork and were excited to include art in their new headquarters.

“It was refreshing for us because even though they were saying ‘we might not be art people ourselves, we want to support art and we want to use this as an opportunity to get art there,'’’ she said.

Submissions for the competition have to be in by Nov. 30. From there pieces will be short-listed.

The competition is open to any Canadian artists or artist teams and Mussato said local artists are encouraged to participate.

“I would like to let local artists know I’m here as a resource,” she said, adding she can help them through the application process by letting them know exactly what they need to have for each step of the process.

A site visit for artists to get a feel for the area the art will be installed is scheduled for Oct. 24.

Artists must pre-register with Mussato at 625-2365.
