Aerospace manufacturing technology third-year students present final projects

Over their time in the program, students were able to work in all manners of advanced manufacturing positions in the aerospace, transit, automotive, and other manufacturing sectors.

THUNDER BAY – Third year aerospace manufacturing technology students from Confederation College presented their final projects on Friday, from carbon fibre bikes to model rockets.

The projects, which they started back in September, required students to use everything they've learned over the past three years to design and create a device of their choice, then present the whole process to their peers and professors.

In total 6 students presented their projects on Friday, which ranged from a watch body and strap to a model rocket.

Jaspreet Singh ended up creating a carbon fibre bike frame for his final which was so light you could lift it with two fingers.

“This was the best thing I could come up with, like the carbon fibre bike frame, it's like really cool and all,” he said.

“So that's something that always intrigued me so, but the thing is to make it hollow was a great task for me, but I had to come up with some new ideas and the professor helped me a lot with it and it seemed to come out really well. Because I use pre carbon fibre, I had to do a lot of prototyping as you've seen all these things.”

Over their time in the program, students were able to work in all manners of advanced manufacturing positions in the aerospace, transit, automotive, and other manufacturing sectors.

Vedangbhai Patel also made his final project out of carbon fibre, but instead of a bike frame, he made a car spoiler. He says it's something he's always wanted to make since starting the program.

[The idea] had a lot of feelings attached of mine, sos that's all I wanted always to do with play, around with carbon fibre and I have all the access to all the machines over here in the college,” he said.

“So, like I was like, why not take a chance and bring up something exciting, I'm just like 19 and I want to do something that is like really, really fascinating for me.”
