THUNDER BAY – A Monday afternoon blaze caused significant damage to a Sandpiper Drive garage.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews responded shortly after 1 p.m. and found a detached garage in flames.

Platoon Chief Joe Grzelewski said the blaze appears to have started on the exterior of the garage and nobody was inside at the time.

He said about 20 per cent of the garage and a significant portion of the building’s attic were involved but it was quickly put out.

“There was quite a bit of smoke showing as we were rolling up Arthur Street,” he said. “Early water took care of it.”

The fire prevention department has been assigned to investigate the cause but Grzelewski said it does not appear to be suspicious.
