THUNDER BAY - Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for the city of Thunder Bay due to smoke plumes from forest fires expected to drift into the area throughout Monday.

The advisory was issued Monday morning and is expected to be in effect until late in the evening.

Numerous forest fires continue to burn throughout Northwestern Ontario and Manitoba and westerly winds forecasted for Monday will bring smoke plumes over the city, stretching as far as Wawa.

Environment Canada said poor air quality and visibility is expected.

People are advised to take extra precaution and reduce exposure to the smoke.

“Wildfire smoke is a constantly-changing mixture of particles and gases which include many chemicals that can be harmful to your health,” Environment Canada states.

Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma are at particular risk. Other individuals may experience increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches, or shortness of breath.

Conditions are expected to improve overnight and Tuesday.
