THUNDER BAY -- Firefighters say a local family escaped an overnight  house fire without serious injury thanks to working smoke alarms.

There were more than five people sleeping in a duplex on Redwood Avenue when the fire broke out, likely on the main floor, Wednesday morning around 1:30 a.m.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue fire prevention officer Eric Nordlund said they woke up after hearing the alarm and were able to get downstairs and out the front door.

"They narrowly escaped with their lives," he said outside of the heavily damaged home as an investigation started.

The other side of the duplex had slight damage after the fire moved through the attic but a fire prevention wall kept most of the home untouched.

Thunder Bay Police Service and the office of the fire marshal will also be part of the investigation.

Nordlund said there's no cause determined yet but crews will be on scene throughout the day.
