THUNDER BAY -- A 35-year-old alleged drug-impaired driver faces charges after crashing into a parked semi trailer, minutes after nearly colliding with a police cruiser.

Thunder Bay Police Service uniform patrol officers were heading south on Simpson Street on Tuesday evening when the driving officer had to slam on the brakes to avoid a collision with a vehicle that passed through the stop sign at the Miles Street intersection, police said in a Wednesday morning news release.

That vehicle completed its turn from Miles Street and began travelling north on Simpson Street. Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over near the corner of Simpson and Finlayson streets, but the driver ignored the officers.

The driver then hit the parked trailer in a parking lot near Pacific Avenue. Police allege the driver was impaired by drug.

The accused is charged with flight from a peace officer and operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drug. He was released on a promise to appear for a future court date.
