Alternative school struggling in first year

Thunder Bay's alternative education school is having some trouble getting off the ground.

Thunder Bay's alternative education school is having some trouble getting off the ground.

The holistic-based Northern Lights Education Initiative began this school year, with one full-time student and three part-time students enrolled in its Grade 1 program. At a cost of $40 per day or $750 each month, educator Scott Read admits the numbers are somewhat cost-prohibitive for many families interested in enrolling their children.

Read said most of the education takes place outdoors, working in gardens and forests, and exploring the community.

But he added that the traditional elements, such as learning the alphabet, are also included.

Read said while the steering committee has long-term plans to add more grades and enter the public school system, he's only focusing on the current year.
