THUNDER BAY – Ambassadors Northwest is throwing its support behind a call for more affordable energy and greater transparency in the industry.
The group, in a release issued on Tuesday, said they back a series of 12 recommendations made last month by the Northern Chambers of Commerce, initiatives that cover the likes of economic development among the principles governing the province’s approach to energy management and more insight into detail of how the province will reach greenhouse gas reductions and expansion of the natural-gas pipeline network.
They also want more to be publicly known about the improvement to the electricity transmission grid, to ensure businesses feel comfortable investing in the North.
to ensure business can invest in the North.“We fully support this Chamber initiative,” says Emilio Rigato, president of Ambassadors Northwest, a business think-tank group of more than 30 chief executives and owners representing all key business and service sectors of Thunder Bay and region.
The group’s mandate is to develop a northern economic climate that will lead to enhanced business investment leading to growing and diverse employment opportunities, according to the release.
“We are particularly concerned with economic development of the North. It is the most important element that requires government attention,” said Rigato.
“The rising cost of energy is a growing and critical concern. We see the potential for $30 million in new cap and trade energy taxes heading to Queen’s Park and no way of knowing if or how it will come back here.”
