TORONTO — Ontarians are getting a break on electricity costs.
As of today, the provincial government is lowering the cost of electricity to the off-peak rate of 8.2 cents per kilowatt-hour, 24 hours a day.
The measure is in effect for the next 21 days.
The off-peak rate is less than half the on-peak rate.
The government says the rate cut will help people spend more time at home while the province deals with the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
It applies to customers on both time-of-use and tiered-rate plans and includes residential customers, small businesses and farms that pay regulated rates set by the Ontario Energy Board.
The province also lowered electricity rates to the off-peak rate during the second wave of the pandemic last winter.
However it did not implement the reduction during the third wave in April.
