THUNDER BAY -- Thunder Bay businessman and philanthropist Andy Coffey died today at the age of 85.

Coffey operated five clothing stores during a business career that spanned four decades, and was involved in extensively in public service through memberships on numerous boards.

But his son, Rob Coffey, expects he will be remembered mostly for his charity work.

"He had a big heart and cared for all people. He spent tireless hours on the Children's Wish Foundation, raising money for them," he told tbnewswatch.com.

Andy Coffey founded the Thunder Bay branch of the Children's Wish Foundation and served as chair until 2014.  His son said the local chapter raised  more than $1 million under his leadership.  Just last month he received a lifetime achievement award from the foundation, and that was "one of the things he was most proud of," he said.

Coun. Iain Angus, who served with Coffey on the local airport authority, said he served the community in many ways over many years.

"He worked hard for the community and will be missed."

A funeral service will be held Saturday.
