Two U.S. residents have been fined for catching and keeping more than their daily limit of black crappies, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources reported Wednesday.

Ronald Tobkin of Perham, Minn., and Bruce Nereson of Fargo, N.D., received fines that totalled nearly $2,000 under the Ontario Fishery Regulations. The MNR reports that the pair caught kept 13 black crappies over the limit.

A court heard that on March 12, conservation officers checked ice fishers on Lake of the Woods near the Canada and U.S. border.

The two men were checked while bringing the fish back to the U.S. after they had spent the day in Ontario.

Officers found 38 black crappies. One man’s limit was 15 while the other angler faced a limit of 10 crappies. The limits were set according to their individual fishing licences.

To report a natural resource violation, the MNR requests residents all 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) or contact a ministry office during regular business hours. Residents can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
