A city councilor is accusing the province of putting communities at risk in an effort to save a few pennies.
Coun. Iain Angus is opposing Ontario’s plan to eliminate the Emergency Management Officer for this region early in the New Year. Monday night, council voted to lobby the province to keep the position filled after the current officer retires in January.
Angus said if the field office is closed, 138 communities will be forced to rely on just one office.
He added that the position has been around for at least 50 years and calls it an excellent resource for planning and co-ordinating events like the Trillium Response excercise that was held in Thunder Bay in 2008.
18 other communities have passed a similar motion.
Fire Chief John Hay said if the office is closed, the nearest field officer will be located in Dubreuilville.
