THUNDER BAY – The two highest spenders in last year's mayoral race failed to win office.
Former city councillors Iain Angus and Frank Pullia had the most expensive campaigns in the 11-person race, according to candidate financial statements posted on the city's website.
Angus, who finished in third, had total expenses of more than $34,000 and finished with a campaign deficit of nearly $900. The Angus campaign received 45 donations of more than $100, including five of more than $1,000. Thunder Bay-Atikokan NDP MPP Judith Monteith-Farrell contributed $400 to Angus, who had previously served in both Queen's Park and on Parliament Hill representing the NDP.
Pullia, the runner-up, spent nearly $30,000 on his fifth mayoral bid. Pullia declared 30 donations of at least $100, also with five greater than $1,000.
Mayor Bill Mauro's campaign expenses totalled $21,000, placing him as the third-highest spender. Mauro had 34 donors who gave at least $100, with seven pitching in $1,000 or more.
Local developer Silvio Di Gregorio contributed $400 to each of those three campaigns.
Four candidates – Kevin Cernjul, Ron Chookomolin, Jim Gamble and Wolfgang Schoor – do not have financial statements posted on the city's website.
Peter Panetta did not declare any income or expenses during the campaign.
The financial statements for council and school board candidates have yet to be posted.
A city spokesperson said all of the received financial statements should be posted by the end of the week.
