THUNDER BAY – For more than 90 years, the poppy has been used as a symbol to commemorate military personal who died at war.
During the annual poppy campaign, thousands of Royal Canadian Legion members across the country distribute poppies to the public.
“The poppy donations honour and support our veterans,” Slovak Legion Branch #129 member Joan Cameron said during the flag raising ceremony at City Hall Wednesday morning.
“All funds raised through the campaign directly support veterans, serving members and their families.”
Cameron said the donations help support programs for veterans in need, along with medical training, research, and medical appliances used to assist in the care of Veterans.
The Canadian Military Family Resource Centre has in-care facilities for elderly, disabled and homeless veterans.
Cameron said south side Legion branches raised more than $25,000 during the last campaign, and they are hoping to raise at least that amount this year.
The poppy also symbolizes a national pride and respect to never forget those who made a sacrifice for freedom.
“I don’t have anybody in the forces myself, but I see all these people that have and have friends with people that have, so for me that’s important,” she said.
Cameron added that about 40,000 poppies are handed by the Legion branches each year.
The Royal Canadian Slovak Legion Branch #129, Royal Canadian Legion Branch #219 and Royal Canadian Legion Branch #149 will begin handing out poppies on Friday.
